The Seventh Grade at Cuthbertson Middle School has led two successful outreach campaigns to regions far beyond Waxhaw, North Carolina. The Gold Team worked with the non-profit Malaria No More to raise money for mosquito nets. The Navy Team worked with the Red Cross with Pennies for Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami.
Congratulations to all the 7th grade Gold team students who worked raising money to purchase mosquito nets in the fight against malaria. While studying diseases of Africa students learned that many countries dealing with malaria are already among the poorer nations and the disease maintains a vicious cycle of disease and poverty. Many cannot afford a bed net for prevention or access to appropriate medical treatment when they fall sick, are the ones that suffer the most.
Mr. Collins’s 7th grade Science class and Mr. Murray’s 7th grade Social Studies class raised money for more than 75 mosquito nets and donated to the malarianomore.com campaign on behalf of the Cavs Who Care! Students created public service announcements to educate the school population on the effects of malaria and the purpose of the organization to show on the Cuhtbertson Middle School’s morning announcements. Money was collected daily from homerooms and during lunch. The Gold Team raised $778.53 for Malaria No More.
When disaster struck Japan on March 11th, CMS Cavaliers were ready and willing to step up and help. The 7th Grade Navy Team decided to raise funds to help the Red Cross. The Red Cross was one of the first organizations to begin helping the Japanese with food and housing; however, their funds quickly ran short due to the size of the disaster. In order to help out, for one week, students from Mrs. Lonon’s and Mr. Collins’ homerooms went around the school and collected change from other homerooms (click to watch the commerical that ran on the morning announcements). Students throughout the school contributed their change and in one week raised a grand total of $1579.66 for the Red Cross.
Thanks so much to the 7th Grade Gold and Navy Teams who worked hard to raise awareness and money for the worthy cause so of Malaria No More and the Red Cross. Thanks also to the teachers, parents, students, and community of Cuthbertson Middle School who graciously donated to these worthy causes!
