December 2011 was a festive and busy month for CMS Cavaliers! From Gingerbread Houses to "Sharing and Caring" to the annual Spelling Bee, students and staff were busy keeping up with academics and all the activities of the holiday season.
On Monday, December 5, students brought in their gingerbread and candy creations for display in CMS's 3rd Annual Gingerbread House Exhibition. As always, the creativity and ingenuity students used to make their masterpieces was impressive, and the results were, well, sweet!
On Wednesday, December 7, the schoolwide Spelling Bee took place. Congratulations to 8th grade student Ryan Milford, our winner, and 6th grade student Jack Maas, the runner-up!
Throughout the month of December, student-athletes in Wrestling and Basketball competed against other UCPS middle school teams. All teams have displayed teamwork, a sportsmanlike attitude and perserverance in the games they've played, win or lose. The season is not yet over-- come out and support the Cavs! Complete schedules can be found in the Athletics section of the CMS website or at gocavs.org.
On Monday, December 12, eighth grade students and teachers enjoyed a field trip to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Students were able to tour the festively decorated mansion, the gardens and grounds while learning about a unique place in North Carolina's history.
The sounds of the season were enjoyed by parents, students and staff at the 6th and 7th grade Winter Band Concert on Monday, December 12. Holiday classics and other favorite tunes were performed by the CMS band under the direction of band directors Todd and Katie Ebert. Another musical treat was in store for audiences on Thursday, December 15 when the Chorus took the Pit stage for their Winter Concert. The same evening, the 8th grade band student performed with the CHS band on the high school campus. No matter which concert one attended, CMS's student musicians gave a wonderful and heartfelt performance!
As Winter Break drew near, about 100 eighth grade students and a dozen staff members traveled to Marshville Elementary to join their kindergarteners in the annual "Sharing and Caring" event. Big and little kids enjoyed stories, games, crafts, lunch, and time to enjoy each other's company. To wrap up the day, each kindergarten student received a bag of gifts prepared by their CMS 8th grade buddy.
